Foundation skills are the key to success in today's world. However, a significant challenge looms over our nation: three million working-age Australians, one in five adults, grapple with low literacy, numeracy, or digital skills. These struggles often stem from circumstances beyond their control, such as health issues, family crises, or learning difficulties.
Federal Minister for Skills and Training, Brendan O’Connor, said in his statement on September 7, 2023 that this isn't merely an individual issue; it's a collective challenge impacting our nation's productivity, economy, and social fabric. Minister O’Connor highlights that research from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has shown that even a modest one per cent increase in a country's literacy level can lead to substantial gains in labour productivity and GDP per person.
A Call to Action
The Federal Government is taking decisive action, investing over $400 million to revamp foundation skills programs through the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program. Jobs and Skills Australia is conducting a nationwide assessment of foundation skill levels, underscoring the government's commitment. Recognising the unique challenges faced by First Nations Australians, the government emphasises co-design and First Nations-led delivery in its plan for foundation skills programs. Next year, the SEE Program will introduce a dedicated First Nations stream, empowering community organisations to provide crucial foundation skills training.
The Power of VET
Minister O'Connor further emphasises that access to education and training is essential for employment prospects. Vocational Education and Training (VET) plays a pivotal role in providing practical, job-ready skills demanded by today's workforce. In a world where jobs in software development, technical professions, nursing, and aged and disabled care are driving growth, VET becomes a vital bridge to advanced skills.
