Ten job seekers have gained employment, and industry have gained new staff to keep their businesses moving, thanks to the Industry Skills Advisory Council NT (ISACNT) and four Workforce Australia Employment Service Providers in June and July.
The ‘All Aboard - Let’s Explore’ manufacturing industry tours held in June and July provided 40 jobseekers with information and the opportunity to engage with six employers from industries they may not have otherwise had exposure to in their day-to-day lives.
InToJobs, APM, Mission Australia, and Melaleuca Australia encouraged job seekers to participate in the tours and organised a chartered coach to collect all the Palmerston and Casuarina participants for a one-hour tour with each employer.
Employers gave jobseekers an overview of the business, the jobs available, career pathways, and highlighted the benefits of working within the manufacturing sector. Both tours showcased a wide variety of jobs within industries such as printing and graphic arts, recycling, glass and fenestration, polymer, precast concrete, and sheet metal manufacturing.
This exercise allowed employers to meet prospective employees face-to-face, while jobseekers gave their best first impression, handing resumes to employers.
As a result of this activity, 15 of the 40 participants were interviewed, 10 of whom gained meaningful long-term employment in recycling, sheet metal and precast concrete manufacturing roles.
The manufacturing industry tours combined in June and July saw a 25 per cent employment success rate.
All Cast NT General Manager Barry Fawcett said participation in the tour had been a success.
“For All Cast NT as a business the site visit was a successful one as from the 20 jobseekers, we are currently employing four in various positions throughout the business,” Mr Fawcett said.
“I encourage other business to try this format and get workers that have struggled to get employment. There’s a huge benefit to being able to explain what you do as a business and what you offer as long-term goals moving forward.”
Steeline GRP Manger Special Projects Mike Apathy said the tour was successful in connecting Steeline GRP with 19 job seekers.
“The efforts undertaken by ISACNT, and the partnering service providers have been nothing short of exemplary,” Mr Apathy said.
“Their structured and well-organised approach ensured a smooth and productive interaction between Steeline GRP and the job seeking candidates, enabling us to explore several opportunities. The attention to detail, deep understanding of the manufacturing industry, and dedication to fulfilling employment needs were evident throughout the process.”
Mr Apathy said the engagement helped to bridge the gap between employers and aspiring candidates, fostering an environment conducive to learning and mutual growth.
“We wholeheartedly encourage other employers to avail themselves of this opportunity to meet potential candidates and contribute to our industry's overall development and enhancement,” Mr Apathy said.
“With this initiative, we'll see more collaborations and a positive move to a thriving and resilient manufacturing sector.”
An earlier industry tour in May 2023, saw two people find jobs in the information and communications technology sector.
